BIPV - Opportunity for Photovoltaics in the Urban Context

Free Webinar

Tuesday, December 7, 2021 | 11:00am–12:00am CET | Webinar Language: German

The building sector plays a special role in the transformation to a climate-neutral society. It is responsible for around 30 % of all CO2 emissions in Germany and as much as 40 % worldwide. Politics and society have recognized this importance. Laws and regulations are being defined, and subsidies are being offered.

The expansion of solar energy on the path to climate neutrality will activate considerable areas for energy production. One advantage is that existing areas or areas that are to be built anyway can be used in multiple ways. The integration of solar panels into roofs and facades of buildings extends their function: in addition to energy generation, they provide weather protection, sun protection, light guiding, fall protection, sound and visual protection, thermal insulation as well as featuring as a design element. The solar panels become building products that generate energy.

In addition, there are more and more builders and architects who are taking their role in the sustainable design of our cities and towns seriously. At the same time, the market is also offering more and more products that allow photovoltaics to be integrated into the building envelope in terms of design, thus meeting the demands of both builders and society.

Our Guests

Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Stefan Sattler, Consultant Renewable Energy & Energy Spatial Planning, City of Vienna

Following his studies, Stefan Sattler has worked in research for more than 4 years as an assistant professor in the field of resource-oriented construction. He has been involved in or led various national and international research projects and has also been involved in teaching.

In 2020, he completed his PhD on the topic of "Climate-sensitive construction in the face of climate change". In addition to his lecturing activities at national and international events, he is also a lecturer at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences - Vienna.
Since 2018, he has been working at the City of Vienna - Energy Planning, where he is in charge of the "renewable energies" department. The focus is on supplying existing buildings with renewable energy so that fossil fuels are no longer needed and Vienna can become climate neutral by 2040.

Dr. Björn Rau, PVcomB - Competence Center Photovoltaics Berlin, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH

Dr. Björn Rau, Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin

Dr. Björn Rau is deputy institute director of PVcomB, the Competence Center Photovoltaics Berlin at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. After completing his doctorate at Humboldt University, the physicist worked at HZB on the development of novel thin-film solar cells. Since 2009, as Head of Technology, he has been responsible for setting up and operating the scientific and technical infrastructure of the PVcomB Technology Transfer Institute. The focus is on application-oriented research and industrial cooperation. One focus of his work is building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). As co-initiator and head of BAIP, he sees himself as a mediator between the world of photovoltaics and that of construction. He is also a board member of the "BIPV Alliance".

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roland Krippner, Architect, Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences Georg-Simon-Ohm, Faculty of Architecture

Roland Krippner has held a professorship for design and technology at the TH Nuremberg since 2008. He is a member of the Solar Energy Promotion Association of Bavaria, a permanent member of the jury of the "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik" and, among other things, author and editor of numerous publications on the subject of architecture and solar energy.

Fabian Flade, Moderator and Office Manager of Solarenergieförderverein Bayern e. V.

Fabian Flade is office manager of the Solarenergieförderverein Bayern and is responsible for the organization of the "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik" and the resulting public relations work for the integration of solar technology into architecture. Fabian Flade is a member of the board of the BIPV Alliance.
