Power-to-gas (PtG) describes a technology in which sustainably generated electricity is converted into gas, such as hydrogen and methane, and stored. This technology is used to store fluctuating solar and wind energy. The energy from green hydrogen can be used to provide electricity, heat and cooling when needed.
Some consider the production of green hydrogen to be energy-intensive, inefficient and cost-intensive. But is that really the case? When does green hydrogen pay off? And is it really a key technology for the energy transition?
Today, we discuss these topics with Martin Weiss from CYTOK and Dr Ricard Petranovic from ABB.

Dr Petranovic studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, where he also obtained his doctorate in electrical energy systems. He started his career at Robert Bosch GmbH in research and advance engineering, focusing on electromagnetic compatibility. He has now been with ABB in Mannheim for 17 years. There, he worked for many years as a technical consultant for medium- and high-voltage electrical networks. He has held a wide variety of management positions in this field. From 2019 to 2024, he worked on energy management systems, their optimisation and the measurement of greenhouse gases. As a technical consultant, he was responsible for developing ABB's CO2 reporting business area. Since 2024, he has been responsible for business development in this area.
With over 20 years of professional experience in electrical engineering and control technology, Martin Weiss manages CYTOK's operational project business, further developing and optimising CYTOK's power-to-gas technology and is responsible for finance. Previously, he was responsible for national and international projects as a project and division manager in energy generation and offshore wind power. He rebuilt the renewable energies sector with a focus on power-to-heat. He was responsible for sales volumes of €4 to €34 million and managed up to 35 employees. Since 2020, he has been working in the power-to-gas division as division manager and management board member.
