The Power Grid of the Future: EM-Power Europe 2023 Lines Up Extensive Accompanying Program Focusing on Smart Grids and Prosumers

Press Release – Tuesday, May 23, 2023

Munich/Pforzheim, May 23, 2023 – Renewable sources of energy are gradually replacing nuclear and coal-fired power plants. Consumers are increasingly becoming prosumers. And e-mobility is still on the rise. In other words, the entire energy supply system is undergoing a transformation. But what does that mean for the power grid of the future? The answer to this question will be explored at EM-Power Europe 2023 through an extensive accompanying program consisting of a conference, forum and side events with a focus on everything there is to know about smart grids and prosumers. The international exhibition for energy management and integrated energy solutions offers grid operators, utility companies, project developers and decision makers from industry, commerce and real estate the ideal opportunity to explore the latest trends, technologies and business models while meeting the industry’s visionaries and decision makers. EM-Power Europe is part of The smarter E Europe and will take place alongside Intersolar Europe, ees Europe and Power2Drive Europe from June 14 to 16 at Messe München. 2,200 exhibitors and over 85,000 visitors from 160 countries are expected to attend in total.

The power grid of the future needs to be digital, flexible, smart and integrated if it is going to guarantee a reliable supply of renewable energy around the clock. This requires innovative technologies and solutions. And the shift in focus at EM- Power Europe reflects just how relevant those technologies and solutions are right now. Compared to last year, 40 percent more exhibitors will be showcasing future-focused products and solutions for the new energy world. The international exhibition for energy management and integrated energy solutions is addressing all solar industry players with its extensive accompanying program.

EM-Power Europe Conference: digitalization and flexibility for the grid of the future

Smart networks of decentralized energy systems, grid management and added flexibility for the energy system of the future are just some of the key developments and trends to be explored at the EM-Power Europe Conference on June 13 and 14. The conference will double up as a global networking platform for industry decision makers. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is organizing one session on innovations and new market designs for the integration of renewable sources of energy. This will bring experts together to discuss how digital solutions can bring more flexibility and how the legal framework needs to change to allow for large-scale implementation. Leading companies will also be introducing technologies and strategies enabling the sustained digitalization of the power grid. After all, that is the key to achieving net zero targets. Decentralization by relying more heavily on distributed energy resources (DERs) is another focus topic at this year’s conference. One example is the integration of solar installations, battery storage systems and electric vehicles into the power grid. Experts will be sharing their examples of best practices here.

EM-Power Forum: innovations, business models and projects in the spotlight

With so many solutions for the new energy world, it is no wonder that such a wide range of topics awaits visitors at the EM-Power Forum (hall B5, booth B5.630). There will be lots of short lectures and best practice presentations on current topics and trends. Up-and-coming start-ups will be revealing their new business models and innovations on all three days of the exhibition. The EM-Power AWARD finalists will also be presenting their latest projects and solutions. Various lectures will reveal ways of tapping into the flexibility potential in the power grid quickly, efficiently and effectively, including one talk presented by the German Association of Energy Market Innovators (bne). That presentation will be complemented by the session being run by European industry association smartEn on new solutions for an optimized decentralized energy supply. After all, that is the key to an efficient and climate-friendly energy system that consumers can participate in too. In that context, local energy communities become even more significant as well. Experts will be introducing new business models for energy sharing at the EM-Power Forum, including regional electricity trading platforms, micro PPAs and peer-to-peer energy trading. Another highlight on the program is the session by the two EU energy transition initiatives ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) and BRIDGE. They will be joining forces to present ten H2020 and Horizon Europe projects that have been implemented globally under one of the major incentive programs for research and innovation.

Full program for energy suppliers

There is a lot on offer at EM-Power Europe for energy suppliers in particular. For the seventh time in a row, the most innovative municipal utilities in German-speaking regions will be presented with the prestigious Energy Transition Award. The award ceremony begins at 4:00pm on June 15 at the EM-Power Forum. The award was initiated by the German CleanTech Institute (DCTI), The smarter E Europe and EUPD Research.

Transmission and distribution grid operators, energy suppliers and renewable energy aggregators can make the most of their own exclusive platform away from the busy crowds – the Utility Knowledge Exchange. “The Utility Knowledge Exchange is a platform designed primarily for networking, sharing experiences and learning from one another,” says Barbara Pilz, Project Manager at EM-Power Europe. “The platform gives experts an opportunity to talk openly and honestly about the challenges surrounding the energy transition and identify solutions together across five sessions.” Registration in advance is essential because spaces are limited to allow for effective networking and knowledge sharing.

EM-Power Europe and the parallel events Intersolar Europe, ees Europe and Power2Drive Europe will all take place from June 14–16, 2023, as part of Europe’s largest platform for the energy industry, The smarter E Europe, at Messe München.
