Boom for Balcony PV Systems: More and More Balcony Owners are Increasingly Opting for Sustainable Energy Generation

Press Release – Wednesday, May 24, 2023

The installation of balcony PV systems has increased strongly over the last five quarters. This shows a high willingness of private individuals to contribute to the new energy world without available roof space, or even in addition to their roof space. In addition to rooftop PV systems, some energy suppliers have already added balcony PV systems to their portfolio. This allows them to reach even more customers and inspire them for the energy world of tomorrow. Utilities with a comprehensive range of products and services in the field of "renewable electricity" will be honoured in the electricity category at the Energy Transition Awards ceremony on 15 June 2023 at The smarter E Europe, Europe's largest energy industry platform.

Bonn, 24.05.2023. The expansion of balcony PV systems increased more than sevenfold in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year. More and more end customers are recognising the potential of balcony PV systems to generate environmentally friendly electricity directly on site and thus contribute to climate protection. Balcony PV systems usually consist of one or a few PV modules and an inverter that converts the direct current produced into alternating current, and thus makes it usable for the household. The balcony PV system is connected to the household's own power circuit via a socket and offers end customers without a roof surface, or in addition to a roof surface, an attractive option for using the benefits of solar energy on their balconies.[1]

A current analysis of the Market Master Data Register shows that there is a strongly growing demand for balcony PV systems. Over the last five quarters, the number of new installations has risen steadily. In the first quarter of 2023, the addition of balcony PV systems in terms of installed capacity increased by around 660 percent compared to the first quarter of 2022. The increase shows the growing interest of home and flat owners in renewable energies and their willingness to actively contribute to the new energy world.

Many energy providers already play an important role in rooftop PV systems by offering homeowners the installation of the systems on their roofs. They often also use contracting models, where the energy provider installs and operates the system while the homeowner uses the electricity generated and pays a rent for the PV system. This model would also be conceivable for balcony PV systems, but is less common so far. Nevertheless, some energy suppliers have already recognised the trend and offer their end customers who do not have any roof space available or would like to supplement their rooftop PV system this innovative option for sustainable energy generation.

Energiewende Award for Energy Suppliers

The most innovative energy providers will be honoured with the Energiewende Award for the 7th time at the innovation platform The smarter E Europe, taking place on June 15, 2023. The Award is addressed to highly engaged energy suppliers, who promote and accelerate the Energiewende (Energy Transition) in the DACH region. The project initiators are the DCTI Deutsches CleanTech Institut (German CleanTech Institute), The smarter E Europe and EUPD Research. The Energy Transition Award winners from previous years are also invited to this year's award ceremony.
