Think Holistically, Design Flexibly – for a Successful Transformation of the Grid

The smarter E Podcast Episode 197 | November 7, 2024 | Language: English

The European distribution grids are facing major challenges. An estimated 600 GW of renewable energy, 50 million electric cars and 50 million heat pumps must be integrated into the power grids by 2030.

All technologically feasible, but the factors of time, money, resources and regulation also play a role in the solution. And occasionally there are side effects that need to be taken into account as well. So where and how is the best place to start? We talk about this with Dirk Kaisers, Segment Leader Distributed Energy Management EMEA from EATON.

Timeline:

  • 02:23 Flexibilization and digitalization of the electricity grid: What are the most important technical and regulatory measures for this?
  • 07:56 The energy system is becoming increasingly decentralized. What opportunities and challenges do you see at the grid edge, the interface between the grid and electricity producers and consumers?
  • 10:32 How can AI improve grid control or energy management and make the grid more efficient and resilient?
  • 15:06 Some of the solutions we use for the energy transition are not entirely unproblematic from a climate protection perspective, for example the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases in wind turbines, heat pumps or transformer stations. What is this all about? → Reference to SF6
  • 17:04 What orders of magnitude are we talking about here? What alternatives are there?
