Over the past few years, there has been consistent growth in the number of data centers. Immense further growth is expected in the coming years, mostly driven by artificial intelligence. The resulting increase in the demand for energy and grid connection capacity (approx. 80%), highly dynamic load profiles and sustainable backup solutions pose major challenges for operators and project developers. This session will highlight how battery storage is opening up new avenues toward a solution to this problem.

Simon Koch is a recognized expert in the implementation of large-scale projects related to the energy transition, with a focus on solar power, grid connections, and energy storage. In his role as Head of BESS at Arcadis, a globally active design, engineering, and consulting organization, he guides clients through the complex challenges of the energy transition and provides valuable insights in the areas of renewable energy and grid connections, including expertise in due diligence processes, grid connection procedures, and planning and permitting experience for substations, transmission lines, and large-scale battery storage systems. Additionally, the BESS subject area is integrated into Arcadis' Technology division, which focuses on the planning and construction of data centers, and maintains regular communication with them on energy supply topics, whether it be on-site power, grid connections, or backup solutions. Before joining Arcadis, he spent three years as a technical project manager for the development of modular BESS at Rolls-Royce, and prior to that, he gained twelve years of diverse experience in various roles at KIWA (PI Berlin AG), where his focus was consistently on the interdisciplinary coordination of large-scale global energy transition projects. Simon Koch holds a Ph.D. in Engineering from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
