Towards a better future: The best energy suppliers of the D-A-CH region honored with “Energiewende Award 2021”

Press release – Friday, October 8, 2021

In the context of the “Energiewende Award 2021” EUPD Research analyzed all of 1,800 energy suppliers in the D-A-CH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). The best energy suppliers were honored with the “Energiewende Award” for their outstanding products and services with respect to energy transition during the innovations platform “The smarter E Europe Restart 2021”.

Bonn/ Munich. Also in Germany, the year 2021 clearly demonstrated in an alarming way that climate change is an acute, global challenge with enormous damage and numerous victims. As a key to alleviate the climate crisis, energy transition is the responsibility of society as a whole. The energy industry has an important role to play – as energy producers on the one hand and a direct link to energy consumers on the other.

The Energiewende Award is a reflection of society and shows that any company – from small, local municipal utility up to international energy groups – can and must contribute to energy transition. Activities of energy suppliers in the D-A-CH region are as diverse as energy transition itself regarding its four segments: Electricity, Heat, Energy Efficiency and Mobility.

A growing number of energy suppliers offer classic products such as green electricity rates, photovoltaic- and storage systems. In line with a strong market growth of electric mobility, more and more energy suppliers offer electricity rates for EV charging at home and on the road or charging stations. From a technological perspective, the heating sector is still dominated by conventional heating systems. However, energy suppliers expand their offerings regarding heat generation and help consumers to avoid heat loss. Numerous consulting services in the area of energy efficiency complement the portfolio of many energy suppliers.

For the fifth time, the most innovative energy providers of the D-A-CH region were honored with the Energiewende Award in the categories: “Electricity”, “Heat”, “Mobility”, “Energy Efficiency” and “Energy Transition” overall at the innovation platform “The smarter E Europe“ on October 7, 2021. With an increasing importance of fluctuating energy sources and volatile electricity rates, the digitalization of energy supply becomes more and more critical. Therefore, a special focus was on awarding digital energy suppliers, whose innovative business models allow for a stronger involvement of end consumers in the energy markets and thus, actively accelerate the energy transition.

The Energiewende Award initiators The smarter E Europe, Europe’s largest energy industry platform, the DCTI Deutsches CleanTech Institute (German CleanTech Institute), and EUPD Research are delighted to introduce this year’s “Energiewende Award” winners (in alphabetical order) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. For the third time, this year‘s Energiewende Award is being supported by our partner Vaillant.

“The engagement to limit the rampant climate crisis must be the basis for our future social, political and economic behavior. With its pivotal role, energy suppliers serve as an outstanding role model to others. The award is meant to show and honor energy suppliers’ engagement. Congratulations to this year’s awardees, initiators and supporters”, comments Dr. Martin Ammon, managing partner of EUPD Research.
