The German registration statistics reached a new record level for electric cars in September 2020. In contrast, the public charging infrastructure has been rather given poor marks, according to a recent EUPD Research study. About two-thirds of surveyed households name charging stations in their own home as most important need. Outstanding energy suppliers with a comprehensive product and service portfolio are presented as role models and honored during the Energiewende Award.
Bonn. Latest registration data of the Federal Office for Motor Traffic (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt/KBA) show an ongoing growth of electric mobility in Germany. Official statistics indicate that 21,188 pure electric cars had been registered in September 2020 alone, making up a share of eight percent of total registrations. Additionally, 54,036 newly registered hybrid cars had been recorded in the same month. Such an increase in e-cars goes hand in hand with a growing demand for charging infrastructure.
According to the recent survey among 500 home owners in Germany – conducted by market and economic researcher EUPD Research – the public charging structure for electric vehicles receive a poor evaluation. Only twelve percent of surveyed households assess the public charging infrastructure for e-mobility in their area as good or very good. About 60% - almost two-third – of respondents rated the infrastructure as poor or very poor.
Further results of the home owner survey reveal that the lack of public charging infrastructure may cause a higher interest in private charging stations. To the questions about the most important location for charging stations for electric cars, more than two-thirds (67%) state their own home.
Historically, energy suppliers have access to private end consumers and stand for electricity, gas and heat supply. The ecological transformation of transportation offers energy suppliers the opportunity to position themselves as infrastructure provider. From an energy supplier perspective it is critical for their future viability to identify and serve this need adequately. The Energiewende Award by The smarter E Europe, DCTI and EUPD Research acts as catalyst and presents energy suppliers as role models that already have established well-developed portfolios in the area of electric mobility.
As an alternative for the official award ceremony at the innovation platform: “The smarter E Europe – Europe’s largest energy industry platform“ in Munich 2020, a municipal utility best practice day is going to take place. Selected winners of the Energiewende Award will present their solutions according to the motto “Learn from the best”. The online event “Municipal utilities as role models for the Energiewende” consists of three individual sessions with keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert (heads the Energy, Transportation, and Environment department at the German Institute for Economic Research/ DIW Berlin), Dr. Simone Peter (German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) e.V.) and Katja Diehl (owner of She Drives Mobility). It will take place on Thursday, October 22, 2020. All information and free pre-registration can be found here:
