SUMMARY:Technical Discussion on PV Systems vs. Smoke and Heat Extraction Systems (SHE)
TZID:Europe/Berlin
LAST-MODIFIED:20260427T120358Z
DESCRIPTION:Problem Statement Smoke and heat exhaust systems (SHE) are used for preventive fire protection and are designed to quickly remove smoke from buildings to the outside in the event of a fire. In two technical articles\, the Institute for Industrial Aerodynamics (I.F.I.) proposes a reassessment of the previously recommended distances between PV systems and smoke and heat exhaust systems\, because the aerodynamic effectiveness of these systems would be reduced too significantly. For a specific construction project that was examined\, a required distance of at least 5 m or 7 m was determined. Further investigations conducted as part of a master's thesis confirmed this. An expert opinion commissioned by BSW-Solar concludes that these distances cannot be derived from the master's thesis and the available materials. New tests with a suitable test setup would need to be conducted. A regulatory proposal is to be developed in NA 005-52-32. Instead of developing a joint research project\, a recommendation for the distances or measures is to be derived based on further tests following the same test scenario. There is thus still a lack of a scientific basis for realistically determining the influence of PV systems on the aerodynamic effectiveness of natural and mechanical smoke and heat exhaust systems. BSW-Solar therefore intends to commission its own investigations. DIN 18199 introduces requirements for distances to natural and mechanical smoke and heat exhaust systems.
