SUMMARY:Utility Peer Exchange: Large-scale battery storage for active grid stabilization: Lessons learned from a distribution grid pilot project
TZID:Europe/Berlin
LAST-MODIFIED:20260512T100403Z
DESCRIPTION:Our Utility Peer Exchanges are interactive small-group discussions designed exclusively for energy suppliers and grid operators. Each session begins with a brief\, practical keynote presentation by an energy supplier or grid operator\, followed by an open exchange on practical challenges\, lessons learned\, and best practices in real-world operations. The focus is on honest dialogue among like-minded peers rather than formal presentations. Large-scale battery storage systems are becoming a key component for ensuring grid stability and enabling the further integration of renewable energy sources. In the SUREVIVE project\, Westnetz is testing a large-scale battery storage system with grid-forming converters (GFC) in the distribution grid to gain practical experience with grid-supporting operation. In this peer exchange session Dr. Ingo Liere-Netheler from Westnetz GmbH will provide insights into the real-world implementation of a utility-scale battery project\, including grid integration and operational challenges. A particular focus is on the contribution of modern battery systems to grid stability and system services in distribution networks. Based on operational experience\, key lessons learned and takeaways for utilities will be shared and discussed. Speaker: Dr. Ingo Liere-Netheler\, Westnetz GmbH Participation: Participation requires a valid Utility Lounge ticket. Tickets are free of charge. Please send a short email to utility@TheSmarterE.de to receive your personal registration link.
