Industry News – VW and Distribution Grid Operator Charge EVs Smartly

Industry News – June 24, 2022

Charging EVs with cheap electricity and relieving local grids – this is the goal VW is pursuing with the project "Innovation Impulse for Future-Proof Grid Integration of E-Mobility”.

Volkswagen brand Elli, a provider of energy and charging solutions, and distribution grid operator Mitnetz Strom have now launched a pilot project for smart grid integration of electric vehicles. The aim of the project is to use more renewable, regionally generated electricity and relieve local grids. First results of the pilot project are expected in autumn.

The idea behind it: An algorithm uses price incentives to compare the cars' charging plans with regional electricity output from renewable energies and the available capacities in the distribution grid. The resulting flexible grid usage is intended to reduce the frequency of bottlenecks in the power grid and create financial benefits for participants.
In the first step, around 20 drivers of Volkswagen models ID.31, ID.42 or ID.53 are involved this field testing. The process framework is provided by a mechanism for smart flexibilization of grid usage - the “grid check-in”. The charging schedule is automatically confirmed by the network operator, who reconciles it with the available grid capacities. The reconciliation avoids curative congestion measures in the low-voltage level and thus interventions in the charging processes. (SP)
