Europes most active markets regarding demand side flexibility are France and Great Britain followed by Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, finds the EU Market Monitor for Demand Side Flexibility 2020. The report from smartEn business association and research consultancy Delta-EE provides a holistic view of the progress of demand side flexibility across 21 European markets. It finds activity in demand side flexibility in all analysed markets to varying degrees, across different segments, asset types, and market stakeholders.
According to the report, France, Great Britain, Ireland and Belgium have the most open and accessible value streams. Compared to 2019, more ancillary services have opened to demand side flexibility, with distribution system operator specific products emerging.
Notably the French market has grown about 0.6 GW in 2020 as a result of higher demand side flexibility tender prices which increased from 30,000 € per MW and year to 60,000 € leading to a procurement increase of 96%. By 2028, France has set a demand side flexibility target of 6.5 GW.
Across all markets the report finds that industrial loads and distributed generators remain the most commonly used assets for demand side flexibility. However, residential customers and electric vehicles became increasingly active in the past year.
The findings in the Market Monitor are based on smartEn’s and Delta-EE’s primary research across each market. To compare the markets the countries were scored in five categories.
