Energy-Saving Measures Gain Importance Due to Increasing Energy Prices

Press Release – Wednesday, May 10, 2023

Average electricity prices for private households in Germany have risen by around 55 percent within ten years, from 2012 to 2022 (second half of the year). Efficient energy consumption is therefore becoming increasingly important. Energy suppliers can support end customers in minimising their energy consumption by offering, among others, advice. Utilities with a comprehensive range of energy efficiency measures will be honoured in the Energy Efficiency category at the Energy Transition Awards ceremony on 15 June 2023 at The smarter E Europe, Europe's largest energy industry platform.

Bonn, May 10, 2023. Energy prices in Germany have continuously been rising. According to the BDEW's electricity price analysis, electricity prices for private households rose from 25.89 ct/kWh to 40.07 ct/kWh between 2012 and the second half of 2022, an increase of around 55 percent. Thus, the more efficient use of energy is becoming increasingly important. This is where energy suppliers can play an important role by helping their customers to reduce their energy costs.

The BDEW electricity price analysis shows that the average electricity prices for private households with an annual electricity consumption of 3,500 kWh in the second half of 2022, including all taxes and levies, will be around 3 ct/kWh higher at 40.07 ct/kWh than in the first half of 2022 at 37.07 ct/kWh. Despite the abolition of the EEG levy in the second half of 2022, there is a strong increase in electricity due to additional costs in procurement and distribution. This effect will be exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.

Furthermore, a recent survey of 501 homeowners in Germany by EUPD Research shows that around 70 per cent of respondents expect electricity prices to continue to increase strongly to very strongly in the coming years (up to 2030). Consumers have already been hit hard by the energy price rises of recent years. Around 73 per cent of the respondents have taken concrete action as a result of the energy price increases. Of these, around 92 per cent say they are trying to save energy in the home by changing their consumption behaviour.

To minimise the impact of rising energy prices on consumers' wallets, efficient energy use is essential. Energy suppliers can help their customers by showing them how to reduce their energy consumption. For example, they can provide energy saving tips, recommend the use of energy efficient appliances, or demonstrate the savings potential by offering electricity and heating savings advice.

"Overall, efficient energy consumption is very important for the future. Energy suppliers should help their customers to reduce their energy costs in order to contribute to a sustainable use of energy. This is not only in the interest of the end customer, but also an important contribution to climate protection," says Natalja Semerow, Senior Research Analyst at EUPD Research.

In this year's Energiewende Award, energy suppliers are honoured in the energy efficiency category for providing special support to their customers in efficient energy consumption.

Energiewende Award for Energy Suppliers

The most innovative energy providers will be honoured with the Energiewende Award for the 7th time at the innovation platform The smarter E Europe, taking place on June 15, 2023. The Award is addressed to highly engaged energy suppliers, who promote and accelerate the Energiewende (Energy Transition) in the DACH region. The project initiators are the DCTI Deutsches CleanTech Institut (German CleanTech Institute), The smarter E Europe and EUPD Research. The Energy Transition Award winners from previous years are also invited to this year's award ceremony.
