In celebrating its premiere in 2018, The smarter E AWARD pays tribute to these innovations in two categories. The Smart Renewable Energy category honors outstanding, innovative business models and pioneering solutions in the area of sector coupling, while the Outstanding Projects category recognizes projects undertaken in the areas of solar, storage, energy management and clean transportation. With The smarter E AWARD, the organizers are highlighting groundbreaking individual innovations and creating transparency in a complex topic.


1. Smart Renewable Energy

The future of renewable energies in the power supply depends strongly on digitalization along the whole value-added chain – as this is the only way to ensure that power from decentralized and disparate volatile energy sources is optimally integrated into the grid. Numerous new digital services, products and solutions are currently under development. These will control the decentralized energy market flexibly and safely, and in doing so, optimally coordinate generation and consumption.

The awards in the category "Smart Renewable Energy" will be awarded to innovative and intelligent products and concepts in the following areas:

  • Sector coupling (e.g. power-to-heat, vehicle-to-grid, power-to-x)
  • Grid Infrastructure (e.g., solutions and technologies for smart grids or micro grids and for network stabilization)
  • Digitization (e.g., blockchain, internet of things / energy, energy management)
  • Business models for power trading & marketing (e.g., cloud solutions)


2. Outstanding Projects

Innovation is driven by role models and pioneers. That is why we are looking for the "Outstanding Projects" in the field of renewable energies.

Eligible for submission are projects or a product that has been incorporated into a global project, which meet the following requirements.

The project:

  • is exemplary for global future applications.
  • is unique in their expression and realization.
  • must have been fully completed between February 2016 and March 2018.

Awarded will be realized projects in the following areas:

Energy Storage (with or without PV)

  • Using new storage technologies to increase on-site consumption in residential homes, apartment blocks and communities (Community Energy Storage, CES)
